of their coverage, as is, and minimize patients’ out-of-pocket expenses, Dr. Beamon explained. “We will tell you at the outset what your insurance policy pays for and the options you have for covering your remaining balance.”
After an initial exam and x-rays, Beamon Dental can inform patients about what dental treatments they are likely to need in the coming year.
Dental insurance may be purchased separately, or as an add-on to a medical insurance policy. Oftentimes, dental coverage may be started any time of year, depending on the company.
But Dr. Beamon and the American Dental Association also warn that, in some cases, adding dental insurance may cost more than simply paying a dentist’s office directly. So be sure to tally your expenses for insurance premiums, deductibles and co-payments against the savings insurance would give you on your expected dental costs for the coming year. This is especially true if you expect a small or moderate amount of dental work and won’t need as much insurance help.
Notice that some insurance companies make dental policyholders pay premiums for a six-month waiting period before coverage begins. If you had dental insurance with any company in the previous year, be sure to inform your new company; some will waive the six-month delay if you have maintained regular dental coverage.
